This National Statistical notice provides summary statistics on deaths among the UK regular Armed Forces, and trends over the ten year period. This notice also presents information on comparisons to the UK general population. Previously published data on the number of incidents and cause of death have been updated from the latest information received from coroners.
The following information was added on 17th October 2011.
DASA have undertaken a review of all Armed Forces personnel data from the Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) system which has resulted in small changes to Armed Forces strength data from April 2006 to April 2009 (inclusive). These revised strength figures were published for the first time in September 2011 in DASA's annual publication, UK Defence Statistics. DASA is continuing to review JPA data post April 2009.
The National Statistic publication 'Deaths in the UK Regular Armed Forces' was released before the completion of this review and strength data (used in this publication to calculate rates and Standard Mortality Ratios, SMRs) are noted as provisional and subject to review. The Armed Forces mortality data included in UK Defence Statistics (Tables 3.1 to 3.4) present rates and SMRs using the finalised JPA strengths and is therefore the most recent information available. The next edition of the National Statistic publication 'Deaths in the UK Regular Armed Forces' will be released in March 2012 and will incorporate the finalised JPA strengths figures (for data up to April 2009) in presenting trends during 2002-2011.
